if you're practicing long distance shooting, you should have time to get away from a bad situation.

You'll be surprised to see how fast a bad guy can get to you at 16.6 yards (or 50 feet). I don't think it's unreasonable to practice at 50 feet. Distance is your friend in a gun fight and it doesn't end at fifty feet, especially if theres no cover. A shot in back retreating is just deadly a shot in the chest.

Not being argumentative, but why carry a gun if you hope not to use it. Now I don't want to use mine ever, but I will train and be prepared to fight at any distance and any condition. We can't always predict the conditions of the gun fight. Just train to survive and win.

Contact distances (0 - 3') out to 21' (Tueller drill distances). Anything further than that and your lawyer is going to have an extremely difficult time explaining AOJ (Ability, Opportunity and Jeopardy) as your justification for using lethal force. I will however send the target downrange to the 25 yd mark simply because I also train LEO's and security officers who have to qualify at 25 yards and I need to be able to demonstrate what I am teaching.
