I went to a local shop to see what I could see. What other reason is there? :)
Anyway, he has a RRA AR that spits out .22's. I asked him if it was a conversion kit thing or a factory made .22, I asked because the lower receiver has the 5.56 (or maybe it was the .223) caliber stamp. He said it was factory made that way and would require a new upper receiver and all that entailed. He wants $1000, he has a couple of well worn Colt SP2's for $1800. One with a birdcage and one with a open prong flash suppressor.
So question, was he speaking correctly about that RRA. would it need a whole new upper, or can the upper receiver and floating handguards be salvaged? Are the barrel threads the same in the receiver as a receiver built for 5.56 ammo? Does the gas tube have the same ID as one for 5.56? When I looked at the chamber, to me it looked to be a conversion, with the chamber for the .22 no more than what appears to be a simple block of steel with the chamber for 22 ammo drilled out of it. As if it's inserted into the chamber of the original barrel. If it is a simple conversion that's legally reversable, is $1000 too much? He said it's new, but... well... you know. :?:
I want to compete and I'm afraid my M1 might handicap me with it's enbloc clip.

ok what you should do is go out and get a new upper in .223 or 6.8 and switch uppers when you feel like shooting something in a larger cal. now as far as changing out he barrel keep the upper the way it is because its cheaper to shoot 22 rounds to get down with sighting in tageting and so on. You will find that you can build you own upper to how ever you may want it or you can buy a complete upper in any cal that you may want to shoot. But you can also build your own lower if you do some reading thats what i done and now i have three AR's

He's insane.

Just get a standard AR and buy a $200 CMMG conversion kit and be done with it.

Best Brands: Colt, LMT, Daniel Defense, and BCM.

don't buy it that's high for a 22 ar best to buy a complete ar15 in 5.56.make sure that the upper and lower is stamped 223 and 5.56 reason is that an ar15 marked 223 can't fire the higher pressure 5.56.Then buy a conversion kit.

Nah, my gunsmithing bone is itching. I figured I might wrench on it for fun, but I'm not really interested in a .22. I've been shopping RRA and understand they have pretty good tolerances. I'm just looking for another project. Since the economy is tanking, and continues to do so, I need to whittle my interests down to one thing.

If that is the case, I'd recommend building an AR from scratch or from major components at least.

BTW, even a new .22 rifle from the factory doesn't cost anywhere near 1k. I nearly bought a GI Colt A3 last week, and even the colt was under $700. One other thing. The only way you should be able to tell a 22 conversion from a 5.56Nato gun is by inspecting the bolt carrier group or the magazine. Everything else, including the chamber and throating, should be indistinguishable from its 5.56 counterpart. I think you side stepped a stink bomb in this case.

You are interested in building your own custom 10/22 tackdriver? I plan on building one or two some day. They are so easy to build and there tons of parts available. I have some links somewhere where of all the parts I want to get.

I'm leaning towards Ruertar's advice. Going to have to buy the tools, but I've been ridding myself of most of my other hobbies due to the economy. This will be the last to go, or I should say, I'll be gone before I give it up.

Rifles, Mandolin and gardening, that's all I need to keep me off the streets.
