There are some good ideas here. Don't forget your prescription medicines if you have any. I try to keep a padding of 30+ days out on medicine at all times.
I've been pondering what guns and ammo should be in my hiking kit. It would be nice to tote my .308 Win rifle. However, I'm thinking my .22lr rifle with my Glock 27 would be more practical. I guess it depends on what would be going on out there. The recent earthquake in Chile has got me thinking. Right now, the looting in Chile is so bad that many firefighters and rescuers won't even go in to help. Security is paramount. So, the .308 Win rifle might be on my shoulder, but it is heavy compared to my .22lr rifle.
I've also been educating myself on various ways for cleaning water, starting a fire, killing varmints for food, building shelter, etc., for long-term survival.

From what I read here sounds like we need to prepare for two scenarios - evac and home defense...the BOB really only applies to evac and its hard to say what gets priority, depending on your family needs and local availability of natural resources (food and water, fuel, shelter) ... weapons and ammo, communications, med packs, etc. How much cash? You can only carry/store so much. It would be much more do-able if this were a community effort - but these days, we all know better...

The only problem I have with a true bug out bag is mine must have a firearm and ammo in it. My weapon of choice will be my G17 and about 7 mags. I just don't see keeping another firearm in my vehicle when I'm out and about. I only want carry enough supplies to help me make it to a rally point. I can however see keeping a larger bag at home JIC I have to vacate. Are your BOB's designed and packed for a general or specific purpose?

With that said, I will definitely be taking notes! Better safe than sorry bro.

All of that is definetly good ideas, I've been playing around with the idea of having either my 870 or my maverick 88 broken down in a pack with extra rounds for my .45, MRE's, local maps, radios, signal mirror, etc.

I don't carry a true BOB because I don't have anywhere to bug out to. In Atlanta, you can barely bug out to work in the morning on an average day. Trying to get out during an emergency is a fantasy IMO. For that reason, I carry a smaller variation of it pretty much like triggerman's, which I generically call a GHB, or get home bag. All the stuff that you would assume, like clothes, knife, paracord, lights, small food items. I also carry maps, magnesium block, firestarter, compass, three chem lights, OC spray, two water filters (one stage to remove sedentary material and the other for bacteria/protozoa) and tubing, portable short wave radio, hand held digital scanner, and 5W 2m/70cm transceiver. There are also a few mobile and portable antennas and lots of batteries for phone and radios. I actually have a bladder for the bag that I don't carry. While typing out the reply to this thread, I think i'll throw it in my car, so that if I need to, I can fill it from the water I keep in the truck -- about three gallons worth at all times -- and insert it into the bladder compartment if I have to huff it by foot to get home. Have never purchased a MRE but maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing to have either. Will have to get a small stove first. Been keeping my eyes out for an alcohol stove and a swedish/swiss mess kit but haven't had any luck. A couple of years ago, they were all over the surplus market and practically being given away, but no more. I really want to add a small rollable solar charger to the kit, but its kinda pricey and it just isn't a high priority on my long list of preps to secure.

I have one and by my estimation, it will keep me going for about a week. I have pretty much all of my bases covered and one of these days, I'll post a pic of all of the contents. It weighs a little more than I would like for it to (about 45 pounds) and I definitely need to trim it down some. I also need to add a dedicated firearm to it instead of relying on my CCW as a bugout gun. I'm thinking something along the lines of a 4" .357 revolver with about 50 rounds of .38 spl. It's designated purpose is to keep me alive in the event of a riot, earthquake, natural disaster or some other disturbance until I can get home a bug in, it's not meant to be an I.N.C.H. (I'm never coming home) bag. My whole focus in setting everything up is to have two sources of the main things I will need, like two sources of fire starting, two blades, two light sources, two multi-tools ......... etc.

My wife is on board with the BOB idea, some of my co-workers think I'm strange.
I was thinking of getting one of those Mossberg shotguns in the tube, It's called the JIC (just in case). The tube is water/air tight. A friend at work suggested making my own tube using PVC pipe & fittings. What do you think?

I just got two decent hiking backpacks and some survival gear. One backpack is for my girlfriend. It's a smaller than mine. Just a minute ago, she chimed in that she wants a hiking backpack with wheels. I really don't think that's a good idea. I figure that if we're in a survival-type situation, then we'll be spending a lot of time stepping over stuff, climbing over stuff, walking on even ground, etc. Lightness would be ideal over a relatively heavy wheel contraption. Her suggestion kind of irritated me because she waited for me to do a fair amount of research and to buy stuff.
Anyway, two of the most likely survival situations for me would be (1) lost in the mountains somewhere by accidentally taking a wrong turn or something or (2) massive earthquake in California. In both situations, I imagine that wheels on a backpack would be more of a hindrance than a help. However, I have little experience with camping and hiking. Mostly of my knowledge on this subject comes from books and the Internet.
Does anybody with hiking/camping/survival experience have any thoughts for me?
